| 18 year old MARCUS JAY of England became World Under 21 Champion after holding his nerve to beat Poland's JANUSZ PALA (19) in a run-off to claim the title and add his name to an illiustrious list of previous winners. The rostrum was completed by LOUIS JOOSSENS of Belgium, who at just 19 years of age will be eligible to return and challenge again next year as Marcus Jay looks to defend the title. |
| The hard luck story of the day was Vaclav Ruzucha who began with two impressive wins before taking a tumble which saw him unable to continue with a very sore arm, although the injury was later confirmed as not serious. Other riders who had their last shot at the title were Paul Laing, Pat Watkiss, Janek Bartousek and Erling Troelsen, none of them ever threatening a challenge in this meeting. Petr Marko, just 18, impressed but a second ride blank held his challenge back, as did a first ride zero for England's Michael Plant, also just 18. The rest never really challenged seriously although Eddie Mendoza and Archie Sanders picked up good points to suggest they will be back next season and hungry to make a real push for the title. |
