| With 5 current GP riders (who don't need to qualify to the GP Challenge Semis) and 10 places in the next round up for grabs this meeting was all about who would be crowned European Champion. The leading contenders were all hit by misfortune as Irzyk and Tercjak both hit bike troubles and Pala had a fall - in the end some justice was done as the trio all ended on 10 points, along with Milan Stajner, to mean a run-off would be needed for the title. 2-times Polish Champion Gabrys Irzyk came out on top against his fellow countrymen with Janusz Pala and Maciej Tercjak completing the rostrum spots. The real hard luck story of the day though was possibly that of Oleg Yelesnev who pulled up with engine failure twice but still racked up 8 points to end just 2 short of the eventual winner. At least he had the comfort of easily progressing in the chase for a place in next season's GP series though. In the end the qualifying cutoff was a miserly 2 points and both reserves had chances to claim a surprise place in the GP Challenge Semi Finals, but both failed to pick up more than a single point - in fact Louis Joossens took the last spot despite crashing out of the meeting after taking a nasty looking tumble, but his 2nd place in heat 4 had already proved enough to see him have the consolation of qualifying! |
